One of the causes when not properly executing a water loss or leaving it to dry on its own could be mold growth. Mold can grow and reproduce nearly anywhere that moisture is present and can cause serious damage to your home or business. Mold can also cause serious illness in your health due to the spores and fragments that are released into the air. Asthma attacks may be caused by mold or mold spores in people who have asthma or are allergic to mold. Even in some non-allergic individuals, mold can cause symptoms or irritations in the eyes, skin and airways.

Is it possible to prevent mold in the household?

The best way to prevent mold in the home is the control of moisture. Although it is impossible to eliminate all mold, the mold spores will not grow in the absence of moisture. In other words, controlling the moisture is the key to preventing mold growth. Here are some things you can do to prevent the growth of mold in your home:

  • Water problems such as leaks in the plumbing or other structures that can lead to moisture build up should be identified and repaired.
  • Clean and dry areas where water tends to sit within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  • Use bathroom exhaust fans or open windows for air circulation.
  • Open windows to circulate air and maintain good ventilation around the house or turn on your air conditioner.
  • Appliance that produce moisture such as stoves and dryers should be vented to the outdoors if possible.
  • If there is water damage call a professional to take care of the problem as doing it yourself can make it worse.

How should mold be cleaned up?

At Quality Environmental we specialize in mold remediation and mold removal. We will arrange a convenient time to conduct the inspection free of charge. The process in conducting the removal of mold is:

Identify where the source(s) of water is coming from:

This is the most important step when removing mold and can be overlooked. If this step is not adequately taken, then you can be sure that the mold will be back.

Controlling the contamination at its source:

It is important that when removing mold you contain it and avoid mold spores to spread throughout the rest of the house. Installing a proper containment to stop cross contamination and protect occupants and their belongings is vital.

Physically removing the mold:

Trying to do it yourself by pouring bleach or encapsulating the mold won’t eliminate the mold but just prolong the issue. By physically removing it and placing the debris in an air tight bag and deposing of it from the job site is the best way to get rid of the mold.

After physically removing the mold we take a further step by thoroughly wiping down and decontaminating the area. We use non-synthetic chemical plant base product.

Using specialized equipment:

As mold can be hazardous to the health of our technicians, we require them to wear protective gear to prevent exposure to the harmful airborne mold spores. We also require the use of negative air machines to vent the contaminated air from the affected area out of your home or business and HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters which is a mechanical air filter that works by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles.

Industrial Hygienist:

After the remediation work is done an independent third party Industrial Hygienist should come to perform a clearance to verify the work has been completed. This should always be done be someone different other than the company that removed the mold.
